Weekend Service Sermon

Every era and culture has passages of scripture that become controversial.  Today’s text is that.  But rightly understood, today’s text can provide a pattern of interaction between men and women that fosters respect and a realization that God has done something quite extraordinary in the creating of male and female.  Rather than seeing today’s text as restrictive, our challenge is to see in it an insight as to what makes us unique and special as men and women.

A.  Women are encouraged to:

            1.  learn Biblical truth

            2.  learn with the attitude of a believer

B.  Women are forbidden from:

            1.  giving doctrinal teaching in the assembled church

            2.  exercising the authority of elder

C.  God has an order for men and women grounded in creation

            1.  Men and women are fully equal

            2.  Men and women have complementary roles

            3.  These roles are worked out in the context of home and family
