How We Live Out Our Discipleship Journey

Discipleship:
Follow Jesus

Jesus’ followers are transformed by abiding in him, through Word and Spirit, to reflect his love and character to one another and the world.

Jesus’ mission is to transform us, his followers, into his likeness. He calls us to abide in him, base our lives on his Word, and live by the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. Our relationship with Jesus begins with spiritual rebirth by the Spirit of God, continues as we surrender everything to him, and manifests itself in worshipping God with all that we are. Marks of genuine discipleship are love for Jesus, love for the Word of God, joy in worship and prayer, love for the church family, love for those who do not yet know Jesus, love for enemies, humility, integrity, and a forgiving spirit.

Family:
Grow Together

God adopts Jesus’ followers into his family, uniting them by his Spirit, to be his church, serve one another, and reflect his glory to the world.

God the Father adopts followers of Jesus into his eternal family.  As sons and daughters of God, we center our church family life in Jesus, the foundation, builder, and head of the church. As we abide in Jesus, we are fit together like living stones and become a spiritual house where God is pleased to dwell by his Spirit. In Christ, we are his body on earth, set apart to be the primary agent of his kingdom, for his glory among the nations. By his Spirit, God calls and gifts all members of the church family to serve one another, so that we might reach maturity in Christ and be equipped to minister to those around us.  When followers of Jesus walk together in love and harmony, they reflect the likeness of Jesus to each other and the world.

Mission:
Multiply Disciples

Jesus’ followers are invited into God’s mission, empowered by the Spirit to make disciples who make disciples, proclaiming the gospel in word and deed so that disciples from all peoples may worship him forever.

God is on mission to the world.  As followers of Jesus, under his universal authority, our core mission is to make disciples of Jesus that make disciples.  As his sent ones, we proclaim the gospel with joy, through word and deed, wherever the Spirit leads.  By the grace of God and filling of the Spirit, we call others to imitate us insofar as we imitate Jesus.  The scope of making disciples includes acts of justice and mercy, defending the poor and oppressed, defending the faith, teaching all that Jesus commanded, being a generous and loving family for all people, and being salt and light in society.  The ultimate purpose of making disciples is that all people groups join in worshipping God forever and ever.
