A Message from Pastor Ray
Dear Willingdon Church family,
On Thursday (March 12th), the BC Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, directed event organizers to cancel any gatherings larger than 250 people due to the spread of COVID-19. With the scale of global transmission, she emphasized the importance of social distancing in order to protect those who are vulnerable. According to Dr. Henry, the measures are needed to “flatten the curve” of new infections and to prevent health-care facilities from being overwhelmed. She underscored the necessity of these actions for a season. It is not forever.
1 Peter 2:17 instructs us: “Honour everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the emperor.” As pastors and elders of the Willingdon Church family, we believe we must honour and support the thoughtful directives provided by the provincial government. At the same time, we understand we are to fear God, and God alone. He is the only one who numbers our days (Psalm 139:16). We live under his sovereign, powerful, gracious hand.
And, God is sovereignly accomplishing his purposes in the midst of the storms of life. We may be unsettled by the global impact of the corona virus and the extraordinary measures being taken by our government, but the Lord is not surprised. He invites us to meet Him, the One on the throne, in the middle of the storm. You may be encouraged by a message I preached on the storms of life a few years ago. As pastors and elders, we love the international, multi-generational church family God has woven together at Willingdon. Our earnest desire is to exercise extra diligence in this delicate period to care for the body of Christ and love our neighbours around us, especially the most vulnerable. With this in mind, Willingdon Church facilities will be closed to all events and activities effective March 14th through March 29th.
During this season, we encourage you to visit our website (www.willingdon.org) and enjoy the services online. Life Groups should also meet in homes as they see fit. Our pastoral and staff team will be eager to intercede for you and the ones you love. Please submit your prayer requests online. Further details are provided in the letter written by our Executive Director, Penny Fuchihara, on behalf of the elders of Willingdon.
Know you are in our prayers. Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. Because of Jesus, we have every reason to be filled with hope.
