Matthew 1:18-25

Most of us are very familiar with the Christmas story from Luke’s gospel. That is because Luke tells the story of Jesus’ birth in a manger. The account of the angels and the visit of the shepherds, Jesus trip to the temple and so forth are all explained in fascinating detail there. Matthew’s approach is different. Rather than telling us the details, he explains to us the significance, not of the birth of Jesus, but of his conception. That’s an approach to the Christmas story we may find strange, but it is equally fascinating. It tells us, what we should celebrate before the actual birth.
