John 11:1-27

There are few things in life that focus our attention more clearly than caring for someone close to us who is sick or dying. For a moment, think back to when someone you love was seriously ill – maybe your spouse, child, sibling, parent, friend. You can feel it, can’t you? Maybe you’re going through this experience even today? Their pain and suffering stirs up our emotions at the deepest level.

The most reliable information about what we really believe is often revealed when someone we love is sick and possibly dying. We will do whatever we can to help them. Our convictions about God, the world we live in, about life itself are all put to the test. Today’s text, with Jesus’ powerful declaration, I am the Resurrection and the Life, directly addresses death, our greatest enemy.
