In Canada, we tend to value justice, pleasure, and prosperity over everything else. We despise injustice, suffering, and poverty. We want a society where no one is poor, where no one suffers, and where there is no injustice. We all have rights. Humility is not necessarily a high value.
In the ancient world of Philippi, and this was true throughout the Roman Empire, the pursuit of honour was the highest value. For Greeks, Romans, and Jews, honour was considered to be the ultimate asset or blessing for human beings, and shame the ultimate deficit.
How did humility ever become a virtue?
