Intro:

Of all the questions people ask me about the Old Testament (First Testament), this one surfaces more often than any other: How could God demand that the Israelites wipe out all the Canaanites—men women and children? Is this not divinely sanctioned genocide, which we reject as totally reprehensible. Well, it is impossible to cover the topic adequately in one half-hour sermon, so I thought it might be reasonable and helpful to look at a singular text, Deuteronomy 7:1–16.

Reflection Questions:

• Why is it important for us, when we gather for corporate worship, that we keep reminding ourselves of all the graces that the Lord has lavished on us in Jesus Christ?
• What happens to our sense of mission when we forget from where we came and the special privileges that are ours in Christ Jesus?

• As we look forward to the week that lies ahead, let us pray for sharp memories of God’s grace and eagerness to share that grace with others in action and profession.
