In today’s passage, Paul asks the Corinthian Christians, “Do you not know?” (3x). Perhaps you have had the experience of explaining something to someone a few times – maybe your friend, a child, a spouse – and, in response, they keep asking the same question. Finally, you ask, “What is it that you do not understand here?”
British comedian, podcaster Russell Brand, a self-professed hedonist, said that it was this biblical passage, 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, that truly convicted him. How did he not know that the human body was beautiful and sacred? How did he not know that people should not be objectified? How could he not have known?
Why did people living in ancient Corinth not know that the human body was beautiful and sacred? Why might we not know this today?
