2000 years separate us from Jesus’ earthly life, but his brilliance transcends all these centuries. In today’s passage, he gifts us with his way of seeing marriage, singleness, and children. Jesus provides guidance for all ages, all times, and all cultures.
In today’s passage, Matthew 19:1-15, Jesus makes his final withdrawal from Galilee and embarks on his final journey toward Jerusalem. In the previous chapter, Jesus has just talked about being like humble children, guarantees his presence when we are one, and gives strong encouragement to forgive and be restored.
In light of these sayings, the Pharisees’ question for Jesus in verse 1 is stunning. They want to know if they can divorce for any and every reason. The direction of their question is diametrically opposed to the heart of Jesus for married couples and their children.
