Today we begin a new series, The Advent of Jesus, based on the first 18 verses of the Gospel of John. These verses are the prologue, the introduction to the story. It’s like an overture to an opera. They set the tone for the entire gospel story.
This prologue is the lens through which we must read the book. It is a beautifully crafted mix of rhythmic poetry and prose, with so many layers. It’s like eating a multiple-layered chocolate cake. You have to eat all of the layers to experience the full cake flavour. And, in this case, the more you eat the better it gets and the better you feel!
In these verses, John introduces the most important themes of his gospel, such as: life, light, darkness, truth, grace, and glory. But, more importantly, John introduces his most important character. He tells us who Jesus is.
