Almost every day, my wife will tell me about her day. She has stories to share with me, fascinating stories. I try to listen, but sometimes, on very rare occasions, my mind drifts. I get distracted by some thought of mine. And she’ll notice.
Usually, when this happens, she’ll ask me, “Are you listening? What did I just tell you?” And, quite often, I’ll be able to repeat the words she has just said. And then she’ll say, “You’re hearing the words, but you’re not listening.”
What does it mean to listen? To listen means to not only hear the sounds of the words spoken, but to feel them, understand them, and respond to them. When we listen, we feel the speaker’s heart, we work our minds to understand, and we respond through our words and actions. We engage fully – mind, will, emotions.
