Who Do You Represent On Earth?

Intro

The story of David and Goliath is one of the most beloved stories in all of Scripture. We sing songs about battling our giants. Michelangelo painted this battle scene on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book called, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Mis ts, and the Art of Battling Giants (2015).

We teach our children this story, praying they will trust God in life, while at the same time hoping they will not take too many crazy risks. It has become, in Western culture, a metaphor for anyone overcoming insurmountable odds to defeat an enemy.

What is the story actually about? Is it about God coming to help us slay our giants, or is it about something else, much more foundational and life-changing? How would you answer the question of our sermon title? Who do you represent on earth?

  1. Do we compare our giant to ourselves or to God?
  2. Are we zealous for God’s glory or our own personal victories?
  3. Is our perspective today shaped by God’s faithfulness in the past?
  4. To whom does our battle belong?
  5. Do we have Jesus as our Champion?
