Intro

Two of the only people who would recognize baby Jesus for who he really was were the elderly saints, Simeon and Anna.

• Both were elderly.
• Both had remained devoted to God for years.
• Both were living in expectation.
• Both were led by the Spirit.

 Simeon’s speech is:

• First directed horizontally: he addresses God (2:29-32)
• All longings are fulfilled the person of Jesus.

Then directed vertically: he addresses Mary (2:34-35)

• Jesus was born for adversity.
• Jesus was born to die.
