Matthew 5:21-26

I am often puzzled with the way in which murder is treated in Canadian courts. We make a distinction between three different degrees of murder. For one, I have often wondered whether the victim would be that concerned about these categories. But another issue arises. The idea of pre-meditated murder is altogether perplexing. Premeditated for how long? 5 minutes? 3 hours? 2 days? 2 weeks? 2 years? Is the sentence for murder to vary in length according to the length of premeditation? According to Jesus, there is a predisposition in the heart which betrays a heart as a murderous heart, even when no action is done. In other words, we have all been premeditating murder for many years.

Today, we will examine the 6th commandment – as well as our hearts.
