We’ve been walking through Joseph’s life experiences, and the past three Sundays have focussed on what took place in his life after his brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt. Through an amazing set of circumstances, orchestrated by the Sovereign God, Joseph had emerged from the depths of King Pharoah’s dungeon to become his second-in-command, in charge of the whole land. Just 30 years old when he was appointed, he spent the next 7 years storing up grain for the 7 years of famine that he had foreseen in King Pharoah’s dreams. Once the 7 years of abundance concluded, the years of famine began just as Joseph had said they would.
His position of authority at that time could hardly have been greater. Once the prophesied 7 years of famine kicked in, Joseph became not only powerful in Egypt, but throughout the world. We read: “Moreover, all the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth” (Genesis 41:57).
And that sets the stage for a very unlikely family reunion – one that could have turned very nasty and violent.
