New Perspective On Privilege

Does All Mean All - Romans

Intro

The topic of privilege is sensitive and heated in our cultural climate. There are many unfair advantages and disadvantages that people face every day due to things they have no control over such as their ethnicity, socioeconomic status, race, gender, age etc. How do followers of Jesus respond to the conversation? What good news does God have for us in the midst of the pervasive challenges that social privilege present us? Romans 3:9-20 provides us with a new, hope-filled perspective on privilege, while simultaneously calling out all people for missing the mark when it comes to living the way God intended for us. Followers of Jesus not only have good news when it comes to the immense difficulties people face in this life, we also have the mandate and empowerment of the Holy Spirit to be a part of changing the world for better and helping fight against the unfair favoritism that social privilege causes throughout the world.

Questions for Reflection:

  • Have you personally experienced social privilege? Have you been unfairly favored or overlooked based on things you were born into? How did you respond?
  • When facing discrimination either towards yourself or people around you, what are ways that you sense God wanting to work through you to help be a part of the solution?
  • How can we as followers of Jesus be an encouraging presence and voice of wisdom in the conversation about privilege in mainstream culture?
