We do not know what we do not know.
I was leading a Bible study at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. One of the attendees had grown up in a nominally Christian family. When I asked him why Jesus had died on the cross, he had no idea. He had passed by Christian churches and Christian symbols every day of his 20 something years. When I briefly explained the meaning of the cross, he literally punched himself in the head. Why had he not understood?
We do not know what we do not know.
If someone asked you today, “What was Jesus’ ultimate purpose in coming to earth?”, how would you answer? Maybe you’re a follower of Jesus and you’re not sure how to answer this question. Maybe you are just here exploring Christianity and would love to hear an answer. Welcome here. Our passage today provides a clear answer.
